About

Editorial Standards

Archelon publishes feeding guides for people who keep aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles. These standards explain how we research, review, correct and update them.

Who writes and reviews our guides

  • Writing: Archelon Editorial researches and writes our guides.
  • Breeder review: Eric Akaba, Archelon founding partner and longtime breeder of rare turtles, reviews guides against his hands-on experience. Articles he has reviewed say so.
  • Veterinary review: guides about health, illness or shell problems are reviewed by a qualified reptile veterinarian before we publish them.

How we source information

We cite sources next to the claims they support and list them at the end of each guide. In order of preference we use:

  1. Peer-reviewed research and veterinary references
  2. Veterinary hospital and university guidance
  3. Herpetological society and specialist references
  4. Eric's first-hand breeding experience, clearly labeled as experience, not research

We check that a source applies to the species and life stage we're writing about. Research on tortoises, for example, isn't used to advise on aquatic turtles. Many turtle species have no established nutrient requirements, and we say so rather than invent precise numbers.

Quotes

Quotes from Eric come from recorded interviews and are used in his words, trimmed only for length (marked with an ellipsis). Eric approves his quotes before publication.

About our own product

Archelon makes turtle food, and our guides sometimes mention it. When they do:

  • Every product fact comes from our printed package label.
  • We don't claim our food prevents or treats disease.
  • We recommend a balanced diet (pellets, greens and other foods), not our product alone.
  • We don't recommend Archelon for tortoises or land turtles.

Corrections and updates

Spotted an error? Email hello@archelonpet.com. We review every report, correct confirmed errors promptly, and note significant corrections on the page. We review each guide at least every six months, and sooner when new evidence changes the advice. The "updated" date on a guide changes only when its content does.
