A high-quality turtle pellet identifies its ingredients clearly, shows its protein, fat, calcium and phosphorus on the label, includes some plant ingredients for omnivores, and tells you which preservative it uses. Below, we walk through Archelon's own ingredient list so you can see what each ingredient is there for, and use the same checks on any brand.
Four checks for any turtle pellet
- Read the first five ingredients. Pet food ingredients are listed in descending order by weight (FDA), so their position shows relative inclusion by weight. It does not reveal ingredient percentages or digestibility.
- Read the guaranteed analysis. It shows minimum protein and fat and maximum fiber and moisture (FDA). Commercial turtle foods run about 30–50% protein and vary widely between brands (Merck).
- Check calcium and phosphorus. A turtle builds a shell, and veterinary guidance warns against foods with a poor calcium-to-phosphorus balance (VCA).
- Find the preservative. Check how the food is preserved. An ingredient list can identify added preservatives; their presence alone does not establish food quality.
Archelon's ingredients, and what each one is there for
| Ingredient (as on the label) | What it is | Why it's in a turtle food |
|---|---|---|
| White Fish Meal | Pacific whiting, a named whitefish | The lead protein. Fish is a natural prey item for aquatic turtles. |
| Fish Protein Concentrate, Blood Meal | Concentrated animal proteins | Raise the protein to 45% minimum |
| Shrimp Meal, Krill Meal | Crustaceans | Crustaceans are part of many wild aquatic turtles' diets; shrimp is used to feed carnivorous turtles when no commercial diet is available (Merck) |
| Black Soldier Fly Larvae | Insect protein | Insects are among the animal foods veterinarians recommend for aquatic turtles (VCA) |
| Dehydrated Kelp, Algae Meal (Spirulina), Dandelion Powder | Seaweed, algae and a leafy green | Plant matter for omnivores (Merck); dandelion greens are on VCA's recommended list |
| Wheat, Rice Flour, Wheat Flour | Grains | Bind the pellet so it holds together in water. Archelon contains grains. |
| Fish Oil | Marine oil | A fat source (7.0% crude fat minimum) |
| Calcium Carbonate, Dicalcium Phosphate | Mineral sources | Mineral ingredients; the label separately states a 3:1 Ca:P ratio |
| Vitamin and mineral premix, Vitamin C (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate), Yeast Culture, chelated minerals | Micronutrients | Round out the formula |
| Calcium Propionate (Preservative) | Preservative | Keeps the food fresh. Named on the label. |

What's left out
Archelon is made with no corn, no soy, no artificial colors and no ethoxyquin.

Floating, 3.0 mm
Aquatic turtles eat with their heads underwater (VCA). Archelon's 3.0 mm pellet floats, so you can see exactly how much was eaten and remove leftovers before they foul the water.
Pellets are the base
A pellet belongs alongside leafy greens and occasional animal foods (VCA). See What to feed a pet turtle for a simple routine.
Compare two labels without guessing
Use the same checklist for both containers. Photograph the ingredient statement, guaranteed analysis, directions, net weight and lot code. A front-of-pack claim is easier to assess when the rest of the label is beside it.
| Check | Write down | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredients | Exact names and order | An ingredient's percentage from its place in the list |
| Guaranteed analysis | Each number and whether it is a minimum or maximum | An exact laboratory result for every batch |
| Calcium and phosphorus | Both declarations and any stated ratio | A fixed measured ratio by dividing two guaranteed minimums |
| Pellet format | Stated size, floating or sinking, and whether your turtle eats it | Species suitability from a product photograph alone |
| Price | Price divided by net weight, with shipping handled consistently | Quality from price per container |
For example, a minimum is a lower bound, not an exact quantity. Dividing two lower bounds does not prove their actual ratio in a batch. Archelon separately states a 3:1 Ca:P ratio; keep that statement distinct from arithmetic on the analysis panel.
Does a high protein number settle the choice?
No. The guarantee is one piece of the label. It does not establish digestibility, how much food the turtle will eat, or whether the pellet is accessible. Check the complete feeding routine in the slider guide, or the musk and mud turtle guide for bottom feeders.
Questions buyers ask
Is higher protein always better?
Not by itself. Protein supports growth, especially in young turtles (Avery et al., 1993), but young turtles shouldn't be pushed to grow too fast (Merck). Feed measured portions.
Does Archelon contain preservatives?
Yes: calcium propionate, listed on the label. It's preserved without ethoxyquin.
Which turtles is Archelon for?
Aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles. It isn't formulated for tortoises or land turtles.
